Samsung announces world’s first NVMe-based portable SSD with Thunderbolt 3
Samsung, a well-known brand for smartphones and consumer electronics, recently introduced the fastest NVMe-based portable SSD X5 with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. If you are a video-based content creator, or your work revolves around sharing and transferring Gigabytes of data, then the Samsung Portable SSD X5 might impress you.
“As a leader in high-performance and reliable storage solutions, we are thrilled to continue to advance the external SSD market with the introduction of our first Thunderbolt 3 portable SSD,” said Mike Mang, Vice President of Brand Product Marketing, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics. “The X5 is yet another testament to Samsung’s commitment to providing innovative portable storage solutions that enable faster transfer of large data files, saving users’ valuable time.”
The new Samsung Portable SSD X5 features a full-metal body with a glossy finish. It has a non-slip bottom mat makes it easier to place the SSD on any surface. Samsung claims that the X5 can easily survive drops of up to 2 meters.
Further, Samsung has internally included Dynamic Thermal Guard technology and a heat sink that prevents the X5 from overheating and allows the SSD to offer optimal performance at all temperatures.
As far as transfer speeds are concerned, they are mind-blowing. For instance, a 20GB 4K UHD video can be transferred in just 12 seconds. The portable SSD offers read speeds of up to 2,800 MB/s and a maximum write speed of 2,300MBps.
The X5 portable SSD relies on Thunderbolt 3 port for transferring data. The two major advantages of Thunderbolt 3 port are fast transfer speeds and secure connection. However, the major disadvantage of Thunderbolt 3 is the absence of this port in a majority of computers.
For security, the SSD comes with ‘Samsung Portable SSD Software’ that offers data protection. This software is based on the AES 256-bit hardware data encryption and offers an optional password protection coupled with an easy configuration of security settings.
The Samsung Portable SSD X5 is priced at $399.99 (roughly Rs. 28,220) for the base 500GB model. While the 1TB model retails for $699.99 (roughly Rs. 49,400), the premium 2TB model will cost $1,399.99 (roughly Rs. 98,700). The Portable SSD X5 comes with a three-year limited warranty and will be available globally from September 3, 2018.
