Every year, GitHub releases its “Octoverse” report that includes the most popular programming languages among users of its site, most popular topics, most trending open source projects, etc.

For the unaware, GitHub, the largest source-code repository in the world, is a $2 billion start-up that allows developers to share source codes, experiences, problems, solutions, build businesses and much more.

Every year millions of people join GitHub and contribute their efforts in the programming world making it the best software development platform in the world.

According to GitHub, the company is seeing trends toward more statically typed languages focused on type safety and interoperability. Based on this trend, programming languages like Kotlin, TypeScript, and Rust have seen a fast growth this year with Kotlin securing the top spot.

The number of contributors writing HCL, a human-readable language for DevOps, has increased two times more since 2017. Further, Python, another popular language in machine learning projects has secured the 8th position in the list. In comparison to the previous year, there were 1.5x more contributors writing Go this year.
